Wait, timing chain failure damaged the crank? That's a pretty spectacular failure even for a timing belt/chain snap.

if it has a chain and belt, it will have to be a Audi of some sort

I think he might have taken some unclear notes there. Pretty sure it just had a belt.

$6500 is pretty expensive for an engine replacement so it must be something newer and/or hard to work on. A 2.0 FSI could easily be had and installed in my area for $3,000 or so, and I don’t think it would double anywhere. So 3.6 VR6 Passat?

But holy shit that much for a 2 liter turbo?! Hell I’d bet the guy thats trained to replace the 2.0 turbo in this charges less.

Seriously - the VAG independent specialist in Charlotte charges between 3-4000 for a 2.0T swap.

I think I paid (its been like 6 years) $1500 for a junk yard pulled engine and the swap. Jeep 4.0L’s are simple, but damn. $3-4k is still a lot, but $6,500 for a pretty common engine seems crazy.

Complete engines run $1800-2000 retail so I imagine the shops can get them around $1500 for the 2.0T. They’re complex and have a lot of stuff to reconnect but I imagine it wouldn’t take a professional shop more than about 10-12 man-hours to do the swap.
